この作品は、映画『ゴッドファーザー』に登場するドン・ヴィトー・コルレオーネ（演：マーロン・ブランド）をモチーフに、藍染襤褸（ぼろ）生地を用いて制作しました。

『ゴッドファーザー』は、物語全体を通じて“対比”が巧みに描かれた作品です。たとえば、冒頭では庭での華やかな結婚式と、屋内でマフィアとして依頼を受けるドンの姿が対照的に描かれます。また、娘婿がイタリアに強制送還されそうだと相談を受ける序盤の場面と、息子マイケルがイタリアから帰れなくなるという展開は、「送り出される者」と「戻れない者」の対比として印象に残る一例です。

さらに終盤では、命を祝う洗礼式と、同時に行われる粛清（死）が交錯し、家族と暴力、光と闇が鮮やかに対照されます。

本作では、こうした構造的な対比の美しさを一枚に凝縮しました。背景は明暗を大胆に分けて世界の二面性を象徴し、ドンの表情は藍染のグラデーションで繊細に描写。父としての温かさと裏社会の支配者としての冷酷さ、その曖昧な境界に潜む“日常に溶け込む暴力性”を表現しています。

この作品は、藍染生地の端切れを丹念にA3サイズのウッドパネル（厚さ2cm）に貼り合わせて制作されています。藍染の深みのある青が、ドン・コルレオーネの威厳と力強さを巧みに表現しています。

The Godfather is a film built on the masterful use of contrast. At the beginning, a joyful wedding celebration unfolds in the garden, while inside the house, the Don quietly conducts his business as a mafia boss—juxtaposing light and shadow, celebration and the underworld.

One particularly striking example of this contrast is found early in the film, when a man pleads with the Don to prevent his son-in-law from being deported to Italy. Later, Don Vito’s own son, Michael, finds himself unable to return from Italy—an inversion that highlights the recurring motif of those who are “sent away” versus those who “cannot return.”

The climax of the film deepens this theme, as scenes of a baptism ceremony—symbolizing life—are intercut with the ruthless executions of rival mafia leaders—symbolizing death. Family and violence, love and vengeance, all collide in a powerful and haunting duality.

This piece captures that structural beauty in a single frame. The background is divided into light and dark, symbolizing two opposing worlds. Don Vito’s expression is rendered through subtle indigo gradations, conveying both the warmth of a father and the cold resolve of a mafia boss. It is this ambiguity—where love and violence coexist without clear borders—that gives The Godfather its enduring power, and which I sought to reflect in this work.


The piece is carefully crafted by adhering indigo-dyed fabric scraps onto an A3-sized wood panel (2cm thick). The deep, rich blue of the indigo dye masterfully captures the aura of dignity and power that Don Corleone embodies.
