the Oiran—icons of beauty, culture, and refinement in Edo-period Japan.
Adorned with elaborate hairstyles and luxurious kimonos,
the Oiran represented more than appearance—
they embodied elegance, intellect, and artistic mastery.
This artwork reconstructs that presence
using only fragments of traditional Japanese indigo-dyed boro fabric.
The original piece was created
by carefully layering vintage indigo textiles by hand.
Not painted, but built through fabric,
capturing both delicate beauty and inner strength.
The background patterns echo the aesthetics of ukiyo-e
while reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens.
