The original photograph was taken by photographer Barron Claiborne in 1997, using a deep red backdrop and a plastic gold crown to express Biggie’s power and charisma. The image was captured just three days before Biggie’s tragic death, making it an iconic representation in hip-hop culture. The title "The King of New York" symbolizes Biggie’s reign over the New York rap scene and has been referred to as "the Mona Lisa of hip-hop."
