**Sacred Mikoshi** is inspired by the mikoshi, one of the most powerful symbols of Japanese festival culture.
During traditional Japanese festivals, a mikoshi serves as a sacred palanquin in which a deity is believed to temporarily reside as it is carried through the community.
People shoulder its weight together.
Voices rise.
Bodies move as one.
The streets fill with energy.
Intensity and unity exist alongside a deep sense of the sacred.
This artwork reconstructs that energy entirely through fragments of vintage Japanese indigo-dyed boro fabric.

Distinctive elements associated with Edo-style mikoshi are incorporated into the composition, bringing together the power of the festival and the intricate beauty of Japanese craftsmanship.
The original artwork was created by individually cutting, layering, and assembling fragments of vintage indigo textiles by hand.

Different shades of indigo, fading, scars, weaves, and imperfections become the colors themselves, creating the ornamentation, weight, movement, and atmosphere of the mikoshi entirely through textile.
