Blade of Loyalty – Yacco Ippei

本作は、東洲斎写楽による浮世絵《三代目大谷鬼次の奴江戸兵衛》と対になる場面に登場する、奴一平を題材にしています。原作の歌舞伎『恋女房染分手綱』では、荒々しい江戸兵衛と、主人に忠義を尽くす従者・一平が対峙する場面が描かれます。江戸兵衛の豪放な悪役ぶりに対し、一平は誠実さと義理人情を体現する存在として対照的に描かれ、観客に深い印象を与えました。

本作では、奴一平の凛とした眼差しと刀を構える姿を、藍染の襤褸（ぼろ）生地を用いて再構築しました。髪や衣服の細部まで藍の濃淡を駆使して表現し、忠義に生きる従者としての気迫と誇りを宿しています。背景には永続や繁栄を意味する「紗綾形文様」を配し、忠誠心と力強さの象徴として重ね合わせました。

古材を再利用したチーク素材のフレームは、年月を経て刻まれた風合いが藍染の深みと調和し、作品にさらなる温かみと奥行きを与えています。また、本作にはNFT（非代替性トークン）が付帯しており、所有権と真正性が保証されます。

藍染と浮世絵、そして舞台芸術が交差するこの作品は、江戸の美意識「粋」を現代に蘇らせる一枚です。

Blade of Loyalty – Yacco Ippei

This work is inspired by Yacco Ippei, the loyal retainer who appears opposite Yacco Edohei in Toshusai Sharaku’s iconic ukiyo-e print Otani Oniji III as Edohei. In the kabuki play Koi Nyōbō Somewake Tazuna, Edohei embodies a brash and villainous presence, while Ippei represents fidelity, sincerity, and the spirit of giri-ninjō (duty and compassion). Their confrontation became a celebrated theatrical moment, with Sharaku capturing Edohei’s ferocity; this piece reimagines Ippei’s steadfast loyalty as its counterpart.

Here, Ippei’s poised stance and penetrating gaze are reconstructed using fragments of indigo-dyed boro fabric. The layered blues highlight both his dignity and the tension of loyalty under pressure. The Sayagata pattern in the background—symbolizing continuity, resilience, and prosperity—further amplifies the sense of unyielding devotion.

The piece is complemented by a reclaimed teak frame, whose aged grain harmonizes with the indigo’s depth, adding warmth and authenticity. An NFT (non-fungible token) and digital certificate accompany the work, ensuring authenticity and ownership security.

By weaving together kabuki theatre, ukiyo-e tradition, and indigo craft, this artwork revives the Edo aesthetic of refined style (iki) in a contemporary form.
